About me

I’m glad you stopped by.

I’m a new dad in my 50s with a baby boy. My journey before marriage and parenthood included decades of pushing myself to extremes while exploring my mental and physical limits. A certain type of courage and resilience defined my life experience during that time. It was gritty and solitary, but that was my identity. I learned to live on that edge to cope with the trauma of my childhood.

I evolved personally and spiritually in my forties. Instead of continuing to risk my life to transcend depression and anger, I stepped back from that to work on healing, to make peace with myself and my past. That process opened me to love, fatherhood, to the creative work I now enjoy so much – as well as coaching and speaking.

The adventures and intense physical challenges I took on over the years provide me with an incredible knowledge base related to mindset, nutrition, training, and recovery. The numerous credentials I have gained help me apply exercise science and physiology to my experience as an extreme athlete.  l reach into that as well as spiritual wisdom when helping people make difficult changes, reach for their goals, and transform their health.

The DIvision i Journey

Playing Division I collegiate football began as a childhood dream for me after attending a Stanford game with my dad in first grade. The successful journey from dream, to goal, to playing for the UC Berkeley Golden Bears remains one of the most important accomplishments of my life.

When I arrived on campus I had to face a deep fear of not being good enough and not belonging. It was gut wrenching at times to manage those emotions. The coaching staff and my professors tested my resolve right away. My choice to major in architecture was met with rebuke from both sides. Those in positions of authority told me it could not be done. I shrugged them off and forged ahead.  And both showed me no mercy for taking on that challenge.

The days were long as I managed a rigorous academic schedule and the enormous demands of the football program.  From time to time I was overcome by all of it and sat slumped at my desk chair with tears streaming down my face. I learned how to make the necessary sacrifices and sustain my effort over a long period of time before finding success. I earned my degree in 4 years and worked my way into a starting position on the team by my senior year. This is cornerstone of who I am and how I approach my life.
